Community Dashboard: Violent crime severity index
Rationale and analysis
How we measure this data
As outlined by Municipal Benchmarking Network Canada with oversight from Niagara Regional Police Service.
Progress and advancements
Due to COVID-19, 2020 was an unprecedented year where most businesses were closed and people stayed home. This situation, unfortunately, resulted in an increase in assaults causing bodily harm, robbery, and domestic violence, which has had an impact on the violent crime severity index for this period.
Niagara's 2023 violent crime severity index score of 66.87 did increased slightly from the 2022 index of 65.88. However, it is below the the Municipal Benchmarking Network Canada median of 93.11
Statistics Canada 2022 data (Table: 35-10-0026-01) shows Niagara's violent crime severity index score of 77.1 is lower than Canada's index score of 97.4.
About this indicator
The violent crime severity index includes all violent offences which involve the use of force or threat against a person as defined by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics.
The violent crime severity index considers not only the change in volume but the relative seriousness and associated sentencing of the crime.
