Rationale and analysis

Why this measurement is important

Provides insight on the level of interest and future development and/or construction of industrial, commercial and institutional buildings, which is an indicator of the overall economic health of the Region.

How we measure this data

As reported by Statistics Canada with a monthly frequency, summarized on an annual / year-to-date basis.

Historically, the data are not strictly comparable due to the continuing improvement in coverage and the modifications to the geographical areas required to reflect the most recent census definitions.

Statistics Canada data may not include the municipalities of Grimsby and West Lincoln and, therefore, this indicator is illustrative only of Niagara Region non-residential building permits.

Prior-year values are annual totals while the current-year value is reported on a cumulative year-to-date basis, as data is made available. Therefore, the current-year value is not directly comparable to the prior-year values and is for information purposes only.

Progress and advancements

The 2021 end-of-year non-residential building permit total was 711, which exceeded the 2020 full-year total of 560 as well as the annual totals for 2018 and 2019.
