Rationale and analysis
Why this measurement is important
The number of fatal and non-fatal opioid-related toxicity events has risen dramatically over the past decade in Ontario. Public Health Ontario has collaborated with the Ontario Drug Policy Research Network and the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario/ Ontario Forensic Pathology Service to examine the circumstances that contribute to opioid-related mortality in Ontario in order to better understand and address the unique needs of Ontarians who may be exposed to opioids.

Death data for 2021 should be considered as preliminary and is subject to change.

Niagara Public Health Unit reported an opioid-related death rate per 100,000 of 34.5 at the end of 2021

Confirmed opioid-related deaths means that the death was caused by consumed substance(s), where one or more of the substances was an opioid.
