Rationale and analysis

Why this measurement is important

Provides insight on the level of interest and future development and/or construction of residential buildings, which is an indicator of the overall economic health of the Region.

How we measure this data

Figures reported by Planning and Development Services, unadjusted for inflation.

Unlike the figures supplied by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the figures contained herein include all twelve Niagara municipalities, including Grimsby and West Lincoln.

About this indicator

Building permits are a type of authorization that must be granted by a government or other regulatory body before the construction of a new or existing building can legally occur.

This indicator shows the total dollar value of building permits for residential structures issued across the twelve Niagara municipalities. The indicator includes new homes and excludes all other residential permits (for example, renovations, pools, et cetera).
