Community Dashboard: Emerald ash borer beetle tree remediation
Rationale and analysis
How we measure this data
As overseen by Public Works, Transportation Services and Niagara Region's Forestry department.
Progress and advancements
In 2022, approximately500 trees were removed as a result of infestations from the Emerald Ash Borer beetle. A reduction in the number of trees removed is attributed to the progress of the EAB removal program.
Staff have removed the majority of trees in previous years and therefore, a significant decrease was seen in 2022.
The Emerald Ash Borer is a pest that affects all species of ash trees in North America, which has killed millions of ash trees across southern Ontario and North America.
Tree mortality may occur in as short a period as one year while it normally occurs within two to three years of a tree becoming infested.
Ash trees are being proactively removed so as to reduce potential damage to nearby homes and property.
The Niagara Region’s Forestry department is in year five of a ten-year capital program managing the outbreak of the Emerald Ash Borer and the devastating impact this invasive pest has had on thousands of ash trees throughout the Region.
