Niagara Region Coat of Arms

Niagara Region, April 21, 2015 - Today, Regional Chair Alan Caslin welcomed the 2015 Federal Budget introduced by the Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Finance, in the House of Commons. Following the Minister’s speech, Chair Caslin issued the following statement:

“The 2015 federal budget is a significant budget that will benefit Niagara families, businesses and taxpayers.

Small businesses are the driver of our regional economy. Niagara business owners will benefit from this budget which reduces the small business tax rate from 11 per cent to 9 per cent by 2019.

Niagara Region will prosper from the federal Governments investment of $5.35 billion a year for provincial, territorial and municipal infrastructure under the New Building Canada Plan.

Niagara welcomes the federal Government's return to a balanced budget and new legislation that ensures good fiscal management and balanced budgets in future years.

Niagara Region's key priority remains securing Niagara GO rail service to Niagara Falls. In that regard, we welcome the federal Government’s focus on public transit infrastructure in this budget.

Recent meetings with the Ministers of Transportation and Infrastructure confirm that our federal partners have a strong interest in seeing Niagara GO become a reality.”

Regional Council will continue to work with our federal partners to ensure that we collaborate and deliver on Regional Council's strategic plan to foster an environment for economic prosperity in Niagara.
