In 2008, 13.8% of children in Niagara were not developmentally ready for school on two or more Early Development Instrument (EDI) domains, which is comparable to the provincial average of 14%.

For the 2008 Early Development Instrument (EDI), school boards exercised passive consent, where all children were included unless the parent decided otherwise. It is believed that this led to the 15.1% increase in participation between 2005 and 2008. It is doubtful that this increase was due to an increase in the number of 5 year olds between the two years given Niagara region's steady birth rate.

Data is not shown when there are less than 20 children included in a neighbourhood, to ensure that no child can be identified and that appropriate scientific standards are met.

Sample Legend - should really be text

This map represents the difference in percentage of children who were not developmentally ready for school on two or more Early Development Instrument (EDI) domains between 2005 and 2008.

Of note, the proportion of neighbourhoods that saw an increase was similar to the proportion of neighbourhoods that saw a decrease. Also, there were three neighbourhoods with no change between 2005 and 2008.

In some instances comparison between 2005 and 2008 results for certain neighbourhoods was not possible because one of the years did not have the minimum 20 children needed for analysis and therefore, these areas cannot be shown.

When looking at trends, it is best to include at least three time points. The data provided by these maps has only two time points so conclusions about trending should not be made based on these data alone.
