Today, Regional Chair Alan Caslin announced that Regional Council has approved $234,000 in funding for the Welland Canal Fallen Workers Memorial to be constructed near Lock 3 at the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canal Centre in St. Catharines. The funding is provided through the Region’s Waterfront Investment Program.
The memorial project, which has a design concept in place, will honour the 137 men who died during the construction of the present-day Welland Canal. The memorial will be located within a beautifully designed park offering opportunities for interactive learning about the history of the canal and its importance to Niagara.
The site will integrate public art, history and the natural environment. The total project cost is $1,215,558, with most of the remaining funds confirmed through other grants, contributions from local municipalities, the marine industry, local businesses, the labour community and private donations.
The Waterfront Investment Program is an incentive program that enables a range of stakeholders, including private sector interests, Local Area Municipalities, Niagara Region, the NPCA, non-profit organizations and the public, to work together to improve access to and provide sustainable investment in Niagara waterfronts.

"The Welland Canal Fallen Workers Memorial will be a lasting tribute to the workers who lost their lives building the Welland Canal, one of Niagara’s most recognizable and valuable assets. The memorial will also provide a vibrant and accessible public space where residents from across our region can gather to learn more about the history of the Welland Canal and the thousands of workers who built it. Investing in our region’s waterfront properties will generate social and economic benefits for all of Niagara’s residents."

"On behalf of the Task Force, I’d like to thank Regional Council for supporting this very worthy project. The Welland Canal Fallen Workers Memorial will honour the fathers, sons and brothers who helped build our community and shape our national economy by constructing the Welland Canal. The 137 men came from all corners of the Niagara region, from eight provinces and 12 countries. The memorial will be a special place for our entire community to remember and reflect on their sacrifices."
