2016 Niagara Community Design Award Winners Announced

The Niagara Community Design Awards recipients were announced last evening at the Stone Mill Inn in St. Catharines. This is the 12th year for the Region’s Niagara Community Design Awards which recognize and celebrate excellence in design in Niagara and that demonstrate the application of Smart Growth Principles. The awards continue to focus on projects that enhance the built environment, efficiently use land, and demonstrate creativity and vision.

The award categories include:

  • Small Scale Project
  • Large Scale Project (Institutional)
  • Large Scale Project (Residential)
  • Architecture – Small Budget
  • Architecture – Large Budget
  • Public Realm Improvement
  • Adaptive Re-use
  • Brownfield
  • Policy and Plans
  • Overall Excellence

This year’s recipients, by category, are:

Small Scale Project

- Award: 24 Wanda Road, St. Catharines

- Honourable Mention: Hillview Container House by Aduvo, St. Catharines

Large Scale Project (Institutional)

- Honourable Mention: FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre, St. Catharines

Large Scale Project (Residential)

Award: Village on the Twelve, St. Catharines

Architecture – Small Budget

-  Honourable Mention: The Gibson Residence, 5 Melrose Drive, Niagara-on-the Lake

Architecture – Large Budget

-  Award: John Brant Public School, Fort Erie

-  Honourable Mention: BETHESDA Family Centre, Thorold

Public Realm Improvement

- Honourable Mention: Victoria Centre Streetscape Revitalization Phase 1, Niagara Falls

Adaptive Re-use

Award: 176 St. Paul Street, St. Catharines

- Award: Kaumeyer Place, Niagara Falls

- Honourable Mention: The Old Firehall, Thorold

Brownfield

- Award: Regent at James, St. Catharines

Policy and Plans

Award: East Fonthill Mixed Use Centre, Pelham

Overall Excellence

-  Award: John Brant Public School, Fort Erie
