History of this Study

The Stage 1 Assessment Report determined that 27 archaeological sites have been registered within the study area boundaries. The study area identified the potential for Aboriginal and Euro-Canadian archaeological sites.

Stage 1 recommended a Stage 2 archaeological assessment be conducted. A Stage 2 assessment is done for identified archaeological sites. It includes a field assessment either through a surface investigation or test pits.

The Stage 2 study will be done on lands that are determined to have archaeological potential and will be potentially impacted by the Wainfleet Serving project.

Prior to any land-disturbing activities adjacent to Morgan's Point Cemetery or Oakwood Cemetery, a Stage 3 archaeological assessment will be conducted to confirm the presence or absence of unmarked graves.

Stage 3 work will be done in accordance with provincial standards and archaeologist guidelines . This work will involve the removal of the topsoil with a Gradall followed by the shovel shining of the exposed surfaces and subsequent inspection for grave shafts.
