Hepatitis B and Meningococcal Vaccinations

At the beginning of the school year (September) all Grade 7 students in Niagara are offered the Hepatitis B and Meningococcal vaccines.

Information Package and Clinic Dates/Times

  • Your child's teacher will send an information package home with your child in September which contains a consent form along with an information sheet on the Hepatitis B and Meningococcal Vaccination Programs for Grade 7 Students.

  • Clinic dates and times will be announced in your child's school newsletter/monthly school calendar and/or during school announcements. On these dates, a team of public health nurses travel to your child's school and gives the vaccines. Your child's participation is voluntary - please complete the consent form and have your child return it to his/her teacher.

My Child is in Grade 8.

  • Students entering Grade 8 in the Fall who have NOT completed their Hepatitis B series or missed their Meningococcal vaccine still have the option of completing their Hepatitis B series and/or receiving their Meningococcal vaccine during Grade 7 school-based immunization clinics.

How are the Vaccines Given?

  • In order to get the best protection against Hepatitis B, a series of 2 needles are needed; 1 in the Fall and 1 in the Spring.
  • Only 1 dose of the Meningococcal vaccine (Menactra®) provides long-term protection against 4 types of meningitis (A,C,Y and W-135). This vaccine is given in the Fall along with the Hepatitis B vaccine.

For more information, please call the Vaccine Preventable Disease Program at 905-688-8248 or 1-888-505-6074 ext. 7425.
