WaterSmart Niagara guides the protection and conservation of Niagara's water resources. The program targets government, businesses and residents across the Niagara region and parts of the City of Hamilton and Haldimand County.
Does water in the Niagara region really need protection?
With water almost all around us, it's hard to believe that water is a significant concern in Niagara. But consider the users of water in the region:
- a population of close to half a million people
- active urban and rural municipalities
- strong agricultural and tourism industries
- successful recreational and business enterprises
These users create a continuous demand for clean and plentiful water, putting pressure on Niagara's limited resources. In Niagara, as elsewhere in Canada, the activities of homeowners, agriculture, tourism, recreation, and business enterprises have had a negative impact on our natural water supplies.
